Iran threatens ‘Stargate’ AI data centers

Iran has escalated its rhetoric, warning of potential attacks on AI data centers across the Middle East, specifically targeting the massive 'Stargate' initiative, in response to ongoing threats and military actions from the United States.

Iran’s military spokesperson, Ebrahim Zolfaghari, released a video this past week indicating that should the U.S. follow through with its threats to strike Iran’s civilian infrastructure, the country would retaliate against U.S. energy and technology infrastructures in the region. This statement underscores the heightened tensions between the two nations, particularly amidst the ongoing conflict that has seen both sides engaging in military provocations.

The video released by Iran prominently features images of a globe, zooming in on the Stargate data center located in the United Arab Emirates, accompanied by a message that claims, “nothing stays hidden to our sight, though hidden by Google.” This declaration emphasizes Iran’s intent to monitor and potentially target significant technological assets.

The Stargate initiative is a $500 billion joint venture involving OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, aimed at constructing AI data centers. Announced in January 2025, the project faced initial challenges, including funding difficulties and high operational costs due to tariffs. Despite these setbacks, the venture aims to expand its infrastructure internationally.

This recent threat from Iran follows U.S. President Trump’s assertion that strikes may be imminent against Iran’s civilian infrastructures, such as power plants and water desalination facilities, if Iran fails to reopen the critically important Strait of Hormuz. This shipping channel has been a focal point of global supply chain disruptions since the onset of the conflict in February.

In the context of the ongoing war, several data centers in the region have already suffered missile strikes. Notably, Iranian missiles targeted Amazon Web Services (AWS) facilities in Bahrain and an Oracle data center in Dubai. Additionally, Iran has explicitly threatened several tech companies, including Nvidia and Apple, further broadening the scope of its military threats.

As tensions continue to escalate, the situation remains fluid, with Iran's military capabilities and its willingness to act against perceived threats posing significant risks to both regional and global technological infrastructures. The international community watches closely as the potential for further conflict looms, particularly for key technological assets that have become critical to global operations.
